Daytona 500 2008 Description

The 2008 Daytona 500 will mark the 50th running of "The Great American Race", and is scheduled to be run on Sunday, February 17, 2008, celebrating the Golden Anniversary of the first race run in 1959, won by Lee Petty. The Harley J. Earl Trophy, which goes to the winner of the race, will be plated in gold instead of silver to commemorate this event. The race is scheduled to be the first Daytona 500 run using NASCAR's Car of Tomorrow, which was introduced in 2007, and become standard as of 2008.

Daytona 500 winners Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson and Mario Andretti, sitcom star Jason Lee, TV host Kelly Ripa, and action sport legend Tony Hawk among others, put their artistic talents to the test to help commemorate the 50th running of NASCAR’s crown jewel stock car race. Daytona International Speedway's “Celebrity Tickets for Charity” competition, where the design of the most sought-after ticket in motorsports history was chosen from submissions provided by celebrities, with fans having a voice in the decision. Those fans chose ten designs - four from past race winners - and a blue ribbon panel made up of NASCAR's family selected comedian/game show host Jeff Foxworthy's design as the winner.

Daytona 500 International Speedway

Daytona International Speedway is a superspeedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. It is a 2.5 mile (4 km) tri-oval race track facility with a seating capacity of 168,000 spectators. It hosts races of motor vehicles of various kinds, including go-karts, motorcycles (on and off road), sports cars, modified pickup trucks, and stock cars. The facility also includes a 3.56 mile (5.7 km) road course and a 180-acre infield, including the 29 acre Lake Lloyd, which has hosted powerboat racing. The facility is also used for an annual spring car show and swap meet, and a Thanksgiving street rod meet, some of the largest of their kind.

Harley J. Earl Trophy

The Harley J. Earl Trophy is the trophy given to the winner of NASCAR's premier event, the Daytona 500. It is named after influential automobile designer Harley Earl, the second commissioner of NASCAR, so-called "father of the Corvette" and designer of the Firebird I prototype that adorns the trophy.
