Preakness Stakes 2008

The Preakness Stakes is an American Grade I stakes race 1-3/16 mile (1.91 km) thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses, held on the third Saturday in May each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies 121 lb (55 kg).

The Preakness is the second and shortest leg in American thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown and almost always attracts the Kentucky Derby winner, some of the other horses that ran in the Derby, and often a few horses that did not start in the Derby. (The phrase "Triple Crown" was not applied to this series of races until the 1930s.) It is followed by the third leg, the Belmont Stakes.

Pimlico Race Course - May 17, 2008

Pimlico Race Course is a horse racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes.

Pimlico officially opened in the fall of 1870, with the colt Preakness winning the first running of the Dinner Party Stakes. Three years later the horse would have the 1873 Preakness Stakes named in his honor. The track is also noted as the home for the match race in which Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in the second Pimlico Special, on November 1, 1938, before a crowd of 43,000. It is currently owned by Magna Entertainment Corp.

2007 Preakness Winner

Curlin won the 2007 Preakness Stakes on May 19, beating the Kentucky Derby winner and favorite Street Sense by a short head.

Robby Albarado has ridden in eight Kentucky Derbys with his best results coming on third place finishers in 2006 and a win with Curlin in 2007.

Steve Asmussen began racing at age sixteen as a jockey, then in 2004 set the record for wins by a trainer with 555 surpassing the mark of 496 held by Jack Van Berg since 1976.
